About Haringey Independent Stop and Search Monitoring Group (HISSMG)

Haringey Independent Stop and Search Monitoring Group (HISSMG) is run by volunteers and it is totally independent of the police. The initiative behind this organisation was to provide the local community with a way of passing on their views and experiences on stop and search. Through continual dialogue with the Police Borough Commander in Haringey, the council and safer neighbourhood board. HISSMG helps to ensure the local police use their stop and search powers fairly, effectively and without discrimination. There is evidence that nationally police use their powers disproportionately against ethnic minorities, particularly black individuals. On a monthly basis HISSMG analyses and monitors the Haringey stop and search to statistics for evidence of this.
